When anyone starts training their hand to master the art of using tools and materials to emulate or express a situation or scene, the ability to copy from ‘still life’ is considered one of the primary foundational skills to master. Textures, colour and the use of shading often features heavily in all ‘still life’ renderings. Therefore, whether painting or sculpting using ceramic material is your muse, ‘still life’ can teach you a great deal about art.
Here at Penkridge Ceramics, we use still life as our inspiration behind all of the ceramic fruit sculptures we provide. Taking our influences from the Trompe-l’œil technique means that we aim to make the ceramic subject of our art, ‘real’. We want to create the illusion of the real thing to the point where those looking upon a ceramic fruit may even want to reach out and touch the item itself, exploring the grooves and marks of each hand painted ceramic fruit in our West Midlands studios, in much the same way we explored and studied the original article when first creating each one our diverse collection of ceramic fruit sculptures.
Our collections of ceramic fruit sculptures are often used for display purposes for stately homes and famous buildings that allow tourists and spectators inside to get a feel for the history and story behind its walls, from room to room. For example, a well-known castle may have had a very prominent history in the country it is in, some being home to royalty, or aristocrats. Or someone of note such as an artist or writer may once have lived in a country house, cottage, or town house, that now sees people every year traversing the rooms and seeing what it was really like when the person or persons once lived there. The West Midlands alone has 26 stately homes and a vast number of other tourist attractions besides. To create a feel of authenticity, these rooms are often refurbished or preserved to depict the way life was when the past occupants were around.
The level of preciseness and the use of the Trompe-l’œil technique in any ceramic fruit sculptures can have a real impact on the spectators, giving them a true representation of the past. Here at Penkridge studios in the West Midlands, we have a real passion for making all of our ceramic fruit sculptures by giving close attention to every detail.
We also have a real love of the diversity in nature, using the fruit subjects we are copying as we create our ceramic fruit sculptures in the West Midlands. Once of the most beautiful aspects of nature and the selection of the many fruits in this world, is how no one fruit is the same as another. That is why we do not just have one ceramic fruit sculpture of each fruit in our collection in the West Midlands, but many variations of that same subject. For example, we have several sculptures of apples, as well as a number of varieties of apple.
